When it comes to words, we prefer to use them for our clients.
Though earlier this month our agency celebrated 32 years in business, and in cases like these we don’t mind using some words for ourselves.
Thirty-two years. That’s three+ decades of pitching, planning, persuading, proofreading, pivoting… and pretending we have time for lunch.
We also were named one of Florida’s Top 100 Women-Led Businesses and one of South Florida’s Top 25. Which is wild. And humbling.
Here are some things I’ve learned over the past three decades that I’d love to share.
- Listen more than you talk, unless it’s a brainstorm session.
- Be curious.
- Clients don’t hire you just for results. They hire you for peace of mind.
- Never say no to a weird idea. It might just work.
- It’s PR, not ER. It’s not life or death. Keep it in perspective, guys.
- Be kind to clients, to media, to each other.
- It’s not her and I, it’s she and I. Grammar does matter.
- Hire good people. Oh, and a Director of Drool.
- Coffee first, pitch second.
- Be generous with credit.
- Never stop learning.
- Follow up. Follow up. Follow Up.
- Good ideas come from unexpected places.
- Trust your gut.
- Stay on top of the news. Always!
- Celebrate the wins – big and small.
- Know your audience.
- Embrace change.
- Be a connector.
- Ask the hard questions.
- Be human.
- Practice empathy.
- Deliver on promises.
- Find your balance.
- Stay humble.
- Bring energy.
- Know when to pivot.
- Own your mistakes.
- Make time for yourself.
- Communicate clearly.
- Be consistent.
- Good People Make Good News
We work in an industry that doesn’t always make space for staying in power. With the advent of the digital age and ever present change, we’re still here. We’re still grateful. We’re still building stories that matter.
This is all possible because of our amazing team, our clients, and anyone who’s ever believed in smart, honest work done by good people who care about making the world a bit lighter.
