PLANTATION CHILDREN RAISE FUNDS FOR HAITI VICTIMS
MIAMI – When a group of children from Plantation, Fla.’s Jacaranda Lakes neighborhood heard about the earthquake in Haiti earlier this year, they immediately wanted to help.
They learned of the Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation (MCHF) Disaster Relief fund while watching news reports and decided making a contribution to the fund was the best way they could support their Haitian counterparts affected by the devastating quake.
What began as a small bake sale became an all-day event that featured car washes, music, food, lemonade and, of course, cupcakes. The group distributed 500 fliers throughout their neighborhood and raised more than $300 for MCHF.
The children were not satisfied with just sending a check. They wanted to see how the funds they raised could help young patients at Miami Children’s Hospital.
Foundation and Hospital staff invited the group of kids, affectionately known among themselves as the “16th Street Gang,” for a special tour of a LifeFlight ambulance and helicopter to demonstrate how quickly and efficiently first responders can stabilize and transport patients to the Hospital.
The children, accompanied by several parents, delivered a jar filled with money to MCHF President Lucy Morillo-Agnetti.
“It brings tears to my eyes seeing these children come together at such a young age to help others less fortunate than themselves,” Morillo-Agnetti said as she accepted the donation.
“Getting to see how Miami Children’s Hospital and the Foundation help children has been such an eye-opening experience for us and our children,” said Stuart Rosenthal, one of the parents who helped organize the donation effort. “This is something we all will carry forward and continue to build upon when the need to help others arises, which we all know is always.”
