COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Cookeville resident William “Bill” May has received an honor the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) has bestowed upon just 29 people in the organization’s nearly 100-year history. At their mid-year meeting, the ASRT Board of Directors honored Passaic County Community College Professor Eileen Maloney and May as only the 28th and 29th persons to receive Life Membership in ASRT since its founding in 1920.

On June 27, May and Maloney were recognized during a special Honors Evening Reception as part of the ASRT Annual Governors Meeting in Albuquerque, N.M. Life Membership is a singular honor reserved for active members who have rendered unusual service to the Society, which encompasses more than 160,000 members. ASRT bylaws limit life members to one for each 2,500 active members.

“Bill has been THE leader of our Radiologic Technology (RT) program since arriving on campus in 2006,” Fortis Institute-Cookeville President James Williamson said. “I can’t even count the number of students who have told me they came to Fortis because they only wanted to learn from the best – and that was…and is…Bill May.”

May, who has been a healthcare educator for more than 40 years, is a leader in the education of students to produce and access medical images of the body in order to diagnose and treat illness and injury. In 1984, he was instrumental in helping create the ASRT Foundation, which has provided more than $3 million to date to support and empower radiologic technology students and professionals with scholarships and research grants that are awarded through international efforts that span five continents.

Through it all, May remains keenly attuned to his students’ needs.

“Nothing provides a greater sense of accomplishment or pleasure than seeing the light of knowledge click on in a student’s eyes, knowing what you are teaching them today will last a lifetime as they progress through their career,” May said. “I’m particularly proud of my contribution to the Foundation’s scholarship program because it opens the door to an education for many students who otherwise might not get the chance to shine as a radiologic technologist.”

In addition to serving as director of the Radiologic Technology program at Fortis Institute’s Cookeville campus, May is a fellow and past president of ASRT, past president of the Tennessee Society of Radiologic Technologists, and he served as national chairman of ASRT’s Education Chapter and annual House of Delegates meeting.
