PHOENIX –– In addition to getting an education that can help prepare them for professional careers, students at Fortis College in Phoenix learn lessons in life – in particular, how to use their talent to benefit others. In this case, providing oral health care to people in need.

Fourteen students enrolled in the Fortis Dental Hygiene program, along with their program director and instructor, on Aug. 13 will caravan from Phoenix to Puerta Penasco, Mexico. There, they will set up clinics and provide much-needed health screenings, oral health care (teeth cleanings for children and scaling/rootplaning for adults), and oral hygiene instruction in Spanish to town residents, before returning on Aug. 17.

“This will be the school’s second Mexico trip to provide dental care to those in need,” says Fortis Dental Hygiene Program Director Lori Riedel. “Our students will be paired with approximately 28 Arizona State University pre-dental students, who will provide chairside assistance.”

According to Riedel, who will be accompanied by instructor Katrina Sanders, on Thurs., Aug. 13, the group will set up a clinic at the Puerta Penasco Church of Latter Day Saints. The clinic will be open for all town residents on Aug. 14 and 15, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. On Sunday, Aug. 16, the Fortis group will host a half-day clinic at a local orphanage, with students having an option to stay afterward and spend extra time with the children.

“We anticipate seeing and treating approximately 250 patients during this trip,” says Riedel, “and we already have plans to return to Puerta Penasco in January to complete care for some patients, and see new ones.”

The students’ cost for the trip is $300 each, which covers their room and board, a beach party, gas, and trip insurance for those who volunteer to drive.
The Mexico trip is being sponsored by Fuerza Buena, a not-for-profit organization. Fuerza Buena founder Roy Bryant will lead the pre-dental students while they are in Mexico.

Fuerza Buena, which translates to “good strength,” works in conjunction with several other organizations to provide oral health services. Twice a year, the group offers opportunities for dental, pre-dental and dental hygiene students to go to Puerta Penasco (Rocky Point), Mexico and provide people there much needed dental treatment and care.
