Fortis College in Ravenna Hosts Spring Graduation April 6 at Northeast Ohio Medical University

RAVENNA, Ohio — When Fortis College in Ravenna graduates march across the stage to receive their diplomas and certificates on April 6, it will mark the next chapter in their lives — one filled with new career aspirations.

They also will be celebrating a first of sorts. This group of graduates will be the first from the Ravenna campus to have their commencement address delivered by a state senator. Ohio Sen. John Eklund (R-District 18) who represents the district in which Fortis College is located, has graciously accepted the school’s invitation to be its graduation speaker.

More than 40 students who have completed career-based education programs ranging from Health Information Technology, Business, Criminal Justice, Practical Nursing and Medical Assisting, to Pharmaceutical Technician, Heating and Cooling, and Welding Technology will graduate during the ceremony. Graduating is a tremendous achievement for many non-traditional students who must overcome life challenges that often impede success. Fortis recognizes the intestinal fortitude, perseverance, and self-sacrifice its graduates must demonstrate just to finish their chosen program of study and march across the stage at graduation.

The Fortis College graduation ceremony will be held at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), 4209 Ohio 44, Rootstown, OH 44272, beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 6.

In his commencement remarks, Sen. Eklund, who previously spoke to students about the education and training they were receiving during a campus tour to learn more about proprietary college operations, will speak about the value education can provide campus graduates as they face life’s challenges and advance in their chosen careers.

“Students and staff of Fortis College are honored to have State Senator Eklund as our commencement speaker,” said Campus President Sonya Hartburg. “The senator not only is active in our community, he’s a strong advocate of the jobs-focused education that career schools like Fortis provide because we help address America’s economy by meeting business’ needs.”

When not representing constituents as a legislator in Columbus, Sen. Eklund is a partner at the law firm Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP, where he has worked for more than 30 years. He serves on a number of boards and community organizations, including the United Way Services of Geauga County Board of Trustees and the Munson Township Scholarship Committee, among others.

Previously Bohecker College, Fortis College has been part of the Ravenna community since 1922. One of the oldest continuously operating private colleges in Ohio, the school became Fortis College in April 2010. Through the years, the Ravenna campus has introduced improved methods of teaching as well as industry-standard equipment and materials. Its standards of excellence, constant updating of courses to meet trends and developments in business and industry, outstanding faculty, and a keen personal interest in its students have enabled the college to maintain a place of high regard within the community.
