Fortis College in Landover President Don McMullen to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award from Maryland Association of Private Colleges & Career Schools

LANDOVER, Md. — Fortis College in Landover President Don McMullen has dedicated most of his professional career to education and the organizations that support career education and training.

On Friday, December 12, McMullen will receive a Distinguished Service-Lifetime Achievement Award from the Maryland Association of Private Colleges and Career Schools (MAPCCS) for his more than 40 years of service to the education sector. The award will be presented during the MAPCCS annual conference at The Westin Baltimore Washington Airport (1110 Old Elkridge Landing Road, Linthicum Heights, MD 21090).

McMullen attended his first association meeting in 1969, when MAPCCS was known as the Chesapeake and Potomac Association of Schools. While the association’s name changed a few times over the intervening years,
McMullen’s commitment to its causes never wavered. He has served on the Board of Directors and as Chair of many committees, along with terms as the association’s President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.

MAPCCS offers a grant to private career college students named for Jack Tolbert, who founded the original Medix campus in Towson, Md., that now is part of the Fortis network of colleges and institutes. When the state was poised to de-fund the Tolbert Grant in 2010, McMullen made several trips to Annapolis to testify for it.

“I believe very strongly in grants such as this that provide educational opportunities to students who might not otherwise be able to attend school,” McMullen says. “Testimony before senators and delegates and meetings with the Speaker helped pave the way for those funds to be restored in the state budget.”
