BOBBI MARTIN JOINS FORTIS COLLEGE, LARGO AS DEAN OF NURSING & DIRECTOR OF NURSING
LARGO, Fla. – Fortis College, Largo has tapped veteran nurse educator Bobbi Martin, MSN, RN, CNE to head the campus’ nursing education curriculum. Named the new Dean of Nursing and Director of Nursing, Martin will be responsible for directing and expanding the nursing program, which enrolled its first class of students in September 2010.
One of a select number of Certified Nurse Educators, Martin joins Fortis College from the Galen School of Nursing in St. Petersburg, Fla., where she was assistant dean and developed, implemented, evaluated and revised the educational program for pre-licensure nursing. While there, she helped raise the school’s NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) pass rate from 87% to 100% for two consecutive years. Among her extensive previous experience, Martin served on the nursing faculty of St. Petersburg College, was assistant chief nursing officer at Northside Hospital and Heart Institute in Pinellas Park, Fla., and nursing administrative supervisor at St. Petersburg’s All Children’s Hospital, and founded Envision Learning Corporation in Largo, Fla., a non-profit organization to combat violence.
A nurse for more than 20 years, Martin entered the education field as a way to help prevent the aftermath of violence she witnessed in numerous pediatric emergency cases.
“To prevent the violence I saw as a nurse, I knew I had to combat it in the schools – and to do that, I had to become a teacher,” Martin recalls.
Martin brings strong leadership to the nursing program. Noted for a deep commitment to students, she embraces the philosophy that nursing needs to continuously develop innovative ideas to attract top candidates, whether in the field of healthcare or in the educational environment where they learn their profession. She plans to instill that sort of educational experience at Fortis College in Largo.
Martin’s concept of leadership is to set expectations in well-defined but attainable terms, and then hold students and faculty accountable. If everyone knows what to expect, she believes they are more comfortable working together toward common goals.
“Fortis has a wonderful vision for educating nurses for success and I am proud to be part of that team,” Martin adds. “We plan to set standards that exemplify what the most elite nursing programs strive to achieve so our students can be assured they are receiving one of the best nursing educations available anywhere.”
Martin is a PhD candidate at the University of South Florida College of Public Health, a Foundation for Nursing Education and Johnson & Johnson’s “Campaign for Nursing’s Future” Faculty Leadership and Mentoring Program recipient, and was awarded a National League of Nurses Health Information Technology Scholars (HITS) Grant.
