Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza will open its first Rhode Island location in Garden City Center on Monday, April 3.

The concept is to use old world, 800-degree coal-burning ovens to create “well done” pizza. There are more than 60 company-owned locations throughout the East Coast, including five in Massachusetts, with the closest in Westwood. They are also expanding to Chicago soon.

The South-Florida-based restaurant was founded by a New York restaurateur, Anthony Bruno, who moved to Florida in the 1980s and ran Anthony’s Runway 84 in Fort Lauderdale. He said he couldn’t find what he called good pizza so he opened the first Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza in Fort Lauderdale in 2002 using family recipes.

In addition to the pizza, the signature dishes include roasted chicken wings and hand-rolled meatballs.

The address is 220 Hillside Road in Cranston. Hours of operation will be 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Patrons can order take-out at (401) 943-1601. Anthony’s has a full bar and craft beer on tap.
